Overview

| VCG Governance Matters
(Volunteer Consulting Group) is a nonprofit organization, founded
in 1969 by the Harvard Business School Club of Greater New York, whose
mission focuses on strengthening nonprofit organizations by increasing
the governing and management ability of their Boards of Directors
(www.vcg.org). Our special focus is bringing together boards needing
new members-and individuals who wish to serve-across boundaries of
skill, ethnicity, age and geography. This mission has guided our work
for the last forty years.
Services
that VCG provides to strengthen the governance of the nonprofit
sector include: (1) Matching Board members and Boards - Our Board
Recruiting helps organizations define the expertise and diversity
of perspective needed on their Boards and conducts targeted searches
to fulfill these recruitment priorities. Board Placement provides
corporations and professional firms with ongoing education as we
work to raise awareness of the need that exists for committed, and
supportive nonprofit Board members. While the business community
supports this work, nonprofits benefit from the great individuals
we offer to them as Board candidates. (2) Working to make Boards
more effective - VCG addresses effective governance structure and
Board management practices. We provide professional guidance on
issues of organizational evolution, Board structure and procedures,
leadership transition and effective oversight and strategy. (3)
Continually upgrading the skills of current Board members - Through
Governance Matters (www.governancematters.org) we offer several
services for those interested in ongoing developments in nonprofit
governance. Through advocacy, peer-learning roundtables and workshops,
and educational resources -- such as the website -- Governance Matters
fosters an open exchange of ideas throughout the nonprofit sector.
Finally,
wrapped around all these local services, we offer our free website
www.boardnetUSA.org which expands opportunities for Boards to explore
a broad, diverse pool of individuals desiring to serve as Board
members across the country. VCG offers nonprofits technical assistance
in using the site, helping them complete a Board Profile as well
as developing an initial strategy for defining and prioritizing
recruitment needs and assessing possible candidates they find on
the site.
VCG has been funded through contributions and grants from over 40
foundations and corporations. Services are made available to nonprofit
organizations on an ability-to-pay basis.
